How it works.
Most flight sites use ‘screen scraping’ technology, where when you enter a specific flight request that’s instantly taken to a range of airlines and brokers websites to bring back the price. The FlightChecker uses ‘spidering’ technology; this means it constantly trawls flight websites to build a database of every available flight, which is 365,000. This uniquely enables it to check months of flight costs in seconds.
Martin Lewis, creator of MoneySavingExpert.com comments: “There's common marketing spiel in the budget airline industry of sales like 'a million seats for £1', yet try to book and suddenly they're nowhere to be found. The FlightChecker is a tool we’ve built to beat that. If you’re flexible it’ll enable you to take a return flight anywhere for an incredibly cheap price.”
“The fact the FlightChecker shows flights under £30 are plentiful for Dublin, Milan and Rome and available for scores of other destinations, shows that you these days you can go to an exotic destination overseas for less than the cost of a train-ticket across the country. It’s a bizarre situation.”

Martin Lewis adds: “It's my hope the FlightChecker allows people to fly more cheaply, but not necessarily more often. If you have saved serious cash, then it's worth considering using a little of it to carbon offset your flight.
“Go to a carbon offsetting site, enter your flight details and it'll calculate an appropriate payment towards a conservation project. These usually involve planting trees, which absorb more CO2 than they produce. In truth, it's unlikely to fully do that, but it is a step in the right direction.”
