I went to My Computer > Tools > Map Network Drive, created drive Z and entered the ip address\folder name and it is now listed under Network Drives in My Computer, but the problem is still there with the anti-virus installed0

Now that you have a mapped drive, what do the permissions say as outlined in post #5 ??
I suppose the easy fix here would be to use an alternative AV such as bitdefender free.
As it sounds like an update to avast has caused these issues0 -
Can they open the file OK if they try to open the file from within Excel, but not when they double click on the .xls file from Windows Explorer?
If so, this could be the culprit, turn off Preview Pane within Explorer!

Right click and properties just gives a general tab with the name, Type: Network Drive, File System: NTFS and the graphic showing the capacity. No other tabs are visible.
I may indeed start looking at an alternative anti virus to see if that has any effect. Can they open the file OK if they try to open the file from within Excel, but not when they double click on the .xls file from Windows Explorer?

The spreadsheets can now be opened from within excel, but alterations cannot be made to them. I looked into turning the preview pane off but it's not obvious in XP - I think you switch to classic view in folder options, but it didn't solve the issue.0
