Using my home broadband with a PAYG phone

I received the new Motorola G5 yesterday. Went to Argos and bought a Three sim card and £10 top up voucher and after much hassle got the back off the phone without breaking any nails!!! not easy. Inserted nano sim, put £10 of Three credit on just to see how long it lasts really.

I make very few calls and texts but will browse the internet mostly. (1p per minute on Three I understand).

My question is how can I be sure that when browsing the internet or sending e mails from home that the phone uses my free home broadband package rather than my paid for Three credit? When I am out and not near my home broadband then I know it will automatically use the Three system.

I want to play with the phone at home to get used to it and not use all my £10 up just messing about. If it seems that the £10 is used up quickly then I will probably go to Talk Talk but their £4 per month is only for the first 12 months and £7.95 after that. I wouldn't normally ever use that amount each month.

Hope I am making my question clear.

Many thanks.

On phone turn OFF mobile data and only turn on when you need to use the paid for service .

You need to connect to your home WIFI network.
It will request your routers password.

Also, you can tell if you using your home broadband connection if you connected to your wifi. The wifi symbol on the status bar at the top should show up and be in bold and show signs of activity. The mobile data symbol (could be 4G/LTE/3G/H+/H...) would be gone.
When you are using your mobile data, the mobile data symbol should show up and show sign of activity.
If you are connected to a wifi network, it usually takes priority over mobile data if you have both turned on, assuming you have access to use the wifi network e.g you input the correct password, or signed in on an open public wifi network.
Note that some phones turn off wifi when the phone goes to sleep so it may use mobile data during that time so you may want to manually turn mobile data off.
Of course, it would be better to manually turn on/off mobile data to ensure you control whether you're using mobile data or not.
  • Thanks all, I have located the on line user guide but it is for older models. A lot of it is relevant to the G5 but the screens look is a bit different.

I will attempt what you have suggested.

All new to me after my old Nokia of 18 or so years.

    Thanks

You should also have a printed user guide inside the box with the Motorola G5.
But if you want the online version, there is one for the G5/G5 Plus:

  • Thanks so much MurkySurfy, I did Google Motorola G5 user guide but didn't get any results except to the G4. That is just what I wanted. The little user guide in the box is very basic get you going stuff but this is what I need.

    Thanks again.
