  • Murphybear - we have considered renting somewhere together but he's just waiting to see about something with his job. If it changes he'll be around a lot more and I'm hoping we'll move in together, but if not I'm not sure - I need to talk to him about it.

I love cats - I have cats at my parents but my boyfriends allergic which would make coming round to mine hard lol. He has a hard time at my parents with the cat let alone living with one.

My parent's house is very close by - 10 minute drive - so yea I can always pop in!

Do you like cats? They make great companions and are suitable for having in a flat.

Great advice! Getting a pet can be the perfect way to give you some companionship while at home without having to sacrifice that sweet, sweet solitude. Cats like to do their own thing a lot anyway, so they feel pretty similar to a roommate :P

Re cats......I was allergic too. Then my son took in a stray. I struggled for about two weeks, took antihistamines every day and gradually got used to the cat. I'm fine now, completely de-sensitised.

The OP is looking to try out somewhere for 6 months, think a cat at this stage may complicate things when/if she decides to try to find a room/flat after this time. A cat is for life.

  • There are always charities looking for people to temporarily foster cats.
I'm in Essex and I see requests all the time for this and generally they cover any costs for medication and keeping, it's just they need someone who can offer a temporary home whilst a permanent owner or health issues etc are sorted.
  • Good that the security of the flat is good. As a young woman living on your own that is important. If you are also attractive = it's even more important. That is voice of experience time:mad::(. Any gaps in security - ask the owner if you can (at your own expense) enhance the security. I'm less concerned than I was - now I'm no longer young and attractive. If I'd known then what I know now - I would have been a sight more concerned than I was...
Seriously? Nothing breeds fear like fear! I don't know your personal circumstance but the op was asking for advice living alone, not someone trying to put the fear of god in them that somehow living alone is inherently more dangerous for an attractive woman !!!!!!

OP I'm sure you will love having your own space, I know I do. best advice I can give is have a home cooked meal on stand by in the freezer for when you really can't be bothered to cook but don't want shreddies! Best bit is coming home after a night out and not having to tip toe around worried about waking others up!

Everyone needs to spend sometime living on their own. It is the only way that you can really find out who you are. You will not then be someone's adult child who lives with their parents or someone's partner.

It is also a great time to find out how to budget when you are responsible for all bills.

Do you have a hobby? If not join something. It is a way of meeting people and making sure that you have something to go out for.
  • I feel your pain! I am 29 and have started to live alone 2 years ago. What Murphybear said about cats has grounds, trust me! I never used to like cats, but situation has changed when I moved out from my parents house and started living alone. At first it was terrible, as I was not used to being alone. So it continued for like 7 month. But one day I saw a homeless kitty... and you know that moment my heart melted :) I could not resist but take him home. And you know, I never regretted.
