Do I need to fill the hundreds of nail holes in skirting board etc before painting?

And if so do I need to get wood filler or will polyfilla do? There's a lot of them - all round the skirting, architraves, stair trim, banisters etc.

I might be way off the mark here, but are you sure they're nail holes, and not woodworm holes? In which case, just make sure they're old holes and not fresh.

It is very unlikely that interior woodwork would have "hundreds" of fixings. In fact very few in my experience.
But, if they are not woodworm holes, they will obviously require filling, If you don't want them to show after the painting.
If they are woodworm, then they should be treated and filled.

Joiner used nail gun? If painting polyfilla or cheap alternative would fill.

If staining then appropriate colour wood filler.

For small holes use flexible decorators caulk - we particularly like ...
Its 99p from toolstation. You can just wipe over any gaps and cracks with a damp cloth after sealing. It gives a much better finish around door frames etc.
