New light fitting and wiring

I want to fit a light that I bought from Dunelm.
It is metal light fitting with no earth.
The wires within the fitting are in a plastic box and is double insulated.

I cannot fit the light with the connection box as there is 6 wires from the ceiling, plus an earth, and will not fit into the connection box which is very small and no earth within the metal fitting, it only as the blue and the brown wire connection, and no other connection for any other wires to fit into.

The one on the ceiling is, two black and the blue, three red in the middle and then one black and the brown. The earth is above these on its own. (Plastic rose)

I cannot post a picture because I am a new member.

How can it be fitted safely?

Many thanks in advance

If you are not confident and competent to install it correctly then contact an Electrician.

Everything has to stay connected as it is & the two wires that went to the old light fitting go to the new one, usually a blue & brown from either end. Put "light rose wiring" into google & there are plenty of explanations of how it works. If it makes sense, off you go, power off first of course. If it doesn't make sense then leave it, or you'll end up with all sorts of problems.

There will be an earth, it will be either at a single point away from the other wires, tucked back unused or sometimes cut off by a fool. With some fittings replacing a pendant there isn't room to fit all the wiring. You will need a terminal block or a Wago and once connected safely it can be pushed up into the ceiling. If this doesn't make sense refer to post #2.

Sorry just read it properly, no earth on new fitting as not required. Most lighting has 9 wires, if its only 6 it is a bit easier. Make sure the switched live is sleeved before you take it all apart. If this doesn't make sense refer to post #2.

  • You'd need something like an Ashley J501, J801 or Click CT101 to connect all the cables and then a short length of twin flex to your new light fitting. The connector pushes up into the ceiling but must remain accessible when the light fitting is removed.

The cable sheaths must continue into the connector with no coloured wires showing and the cable clamps must be used.

Personally I think the CT101 is easier as the two halves can be wired separately and then plugged together.
