Shortening carpet strips?

My flat has no ends between rooms so the carpet is starting to get a little frayed at edges, I purchased some carpet strips that fit thickness wise but just a small amount too long, outside of sawing bits off which I assume I need a good saw anyway is there any other basic method?

If they are metal trim to length with a hacksaw with a fine blade or a junior hacksaw, if wood use a wood saw.0
