My husband never leaves his car in gear, regardless of slope or not (although I did make him when we went to Edinburgh Zoo once - their car park is on the steepest slope and we were at the top) and goes mad on the now-rare occasions that I do it without thinking. I leave mine in neutral when it's on the flat (so all day at work, in shopping centres, etc) but in gear when on slopes (at home where we're only on a very slight incline and corner). Most of the time I only put the handbrake on a notch or two especially after washing because my brakes have a habit of sticking when they're wet!
