XP SP1 & SP2

Hi there,

Had to do a system recover on my pc a few days ago, I am back up and running now.

Yesterday I downloaded all the Updates via windows update, but it didnt download SP1 although it did download SP2?

Should i worry that i havent got SP1 but have SP2 ?

Your opinions please.

Thanks

I don't use XP. SP2 includes all you needed from SP1. SP2 also has haa a few patches that you should consider once you are up and running if you have an older version.

According to this, Windows Update determines if you need SP2

So if Update gives you SP2 you should install it.

AFAIK, SP2 is a catch up.

And this seems to confirm that SP1 is not a pre-requisite

sp2 for windows xp includes all the fixes included in sp1, plus bug fixes caused by sp1.

if you can get hold of sp1, then install that, but i would suggest that you dont upgrade to sp2 yet?

when i run windows update, it tells me to download sp2, but i always, unselect it.

as i work in it, i know the sort of problems caused by new bug/program fixes. it is always worth holding back a few months until the dust settles and some of the big companies around the world have installed and then ripped microsoft to shreds, to get fixes for new bugs/problems caused by sp2
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • Windows keeps tellng me I should install SP2. But I am not going to bother because there are lots of programs that do not work with SP2 yet. I am going to wait a while. You don't need SP2 to get the critical patches, you can get them seperately through windows update

I have installed SP2 and as yet have encountered no problems. Before install I

    created a restore point

    turned off my fire wall

    backed up all files.

I am not using the XP firewall as zone alarm give better protection. However you need to turn XP firewall off as not compatible with zonealarm.

It is better to install SP2 from a disc, these can be prdered from Microsoft, it would appear that problems can occour with the downloaded versions.
    Waddle you do eh?

    I've installed sp2 twice.

Once on my computer from automatic download and once from disk on my sister's computer.

Not a single problem in either case.

With this type of thing, you'll hear a lot of negative stuff from people who have had problems (quite rightly!) but you won't hear as much from those who think it's great - I feel a lot safer when I use IE

I just wanted to say that the chances are you won't have a problem

OK then, just to add to this, I've installed it on 3 PCs now (my desktop, my laptop & neighbour's desktop) no problems on any.

I understood that the majority of problems are with companies, especially those running software that the home user is unlikely to have/need.

Before long, you'll find MS issuing a critical update that requires you to have SP2. So you'll be installing it anyway and then in a blind panic!

SP2 has been out for nearly 2 months now, so you should think about installing it. This link has a list of the software known to conflict with SP2 - most of them, I've never heard of.

If you have anything on that list, go to the relevant to see if they've posted an SP2 patch/update. Run System Restore point or Drive Image/Ghost image of the disk if there's any important programs on it.

For the average home user (internet, email & office use), you're running an increasing risk by not installing SP2
