What should I expect from a Plasterer

Just recently had a plasterer in to skim some walls in a bedroom and big hallway. Left old skirtings but he took down coving and boarded ceilings. He's ended up having to fill and sand gaps at the bottom of the wall near skirtings and several holes where he's put the coving up. Is this normal as the last chap I used skimmed up to coving and down to skirting no problem.

It's the end result that's important. Obviously, it's great if none of that is needed but you have employed a human. It's certainly better than leaving it.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • But would you expect them to put it right? He filled in some of the gaps and sanded a little but has said that's really the decorators job to finish off. Some of the surfaces are bumpy and not flat. They were flatter and smoother before he started.

It's his job to leave you with a flat and smooth finish. If he hasn't done that, refuse to pay him until he rectifies it.

You can't board a ceiling without taking the coving down.

That’s not quite how it is always if the coving is ornate, client wishes to keep it , listed building etc its common to leave in place (Remove existing boarding, lathes etc up too and re-board ) ,

Skirting again no hard rules if its easy to remove and quick to re instate many will but if removing could cause damage, be costly etc many won’t ?

If clients/ OP wanted either/both removed they only need read What’s in quotation description? , Instruct them to do so prior to works starting ,

The most common thing when having walls ceilings etc plastered is a fffing mess when they have finished ?
