Car insurance overnight address

I am currently living at home (with parents), however in a couple of weeks i am due to move out and at my new address my insurance nearly triples.

As my car is registered at my parents address and my mother is an additional driver, is it illegal to leave it insured at this address and put the overnight address as my new house?

It saves me a lot of money and isn't really bending the truth too much. I just want to be sure that the car is legally insured.

Thanks in advance!

    Ask the insurers tomorrow.

Does the area have a high crime rate ?
  • The area that its classed as does but the house is right on the outskirts, i was surprised it was classed as this area

apitt, what you're suggesting isn't illegal but it could render your insurance invalid if you have a claim. Best advice is to shop around for your new address to find the best deal.

Your policy terms will (almost certainly) require you to inform them of any change of address immediately. Failing to do so could invalidate your policy.

That said; insurers will normally want to know two things: an address to use for correspondence, and the address where the car is usually kept overnight. For most people these addresses will be the same. However if you prefer to have correspondence sent to your parents' address there's no reason I can think of why you shouldn't - so long as you tell them that it will normally be kept at your new address. If that saves you money then great, though I'd have expected them to price primarily on the address where it's kept overnight.

I wouldn't risk it; at the end of the day it's concealing a material fact. The primary named driver has the car registered to a different address, and this clearly changes the level of risk for the insurer as the price triples.

I'd have thought it better to be safe than sorry, and shop around for insurance elsewhere factoring in the necessary cancellation charges / outstanding premiums if applicable for the present insurer.
  • Insurance is one of those areas where "bending the truth" even to the smallest degree is likely to end up with you in a world of pain if you ever need to claim. It's likely that if you insure the vehicle at one address but keep it at another overnight your insurance would be invalidated were this not declared when making the proposal and buying the policy. This would not only mean that your claim would not be paid, but your insurance may be cancelled (making it extremely difficult and expensive to find insurance, and not only car insurance, elsewhere in the future) and you would technically be committing insurance fraud.

It's vital that you're open and honest in all information you provide when purchasing insurance. Information is shared and the small amount you might save by "bending the truth" is nothing compared to any loss you may suffer if this came to light or in the event of any claim.
  • Hi, thanks for the reply. I have actually had a quote that states the car is insured and my parents and kept overnight at the new address. Is that not telling them the truth? Or is that still not being honest?
  • It's correct at the moment but you'll need to advise your insurer when you move to your new address so that the policy details are always current and correct. Don't forget to update them as soon as you move as it could cause you problems if you do!

There is no such thing as 'insuring a car at an address'. As pointed out above, you are asked for your address and the address the car is kept at. Tell the truth.
