Looking to open the above account as a savings account. Do I need DD from the account or can I just pay the monthly money in and out to qualify?

No need for a DD. Just put in £1000 per month and you will get the 5%. For me, I have a SO put the £1000 in per month and another one with Nationwide for the next day to return it.0

If you want to qualify for the recommend a friend deal (£100 for each of you) you need to switch with 2 x DDs.... and then £1K per month for the 5% interest.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
