but it doesn't matter if you use more or less than your estimate.
It can if you are trying to select the absolute best tariff. If you estimate your usage as low then you'll pick a low standing charge and high unit price, but using a lot of energy will be expensive. If you estimate high then you'll pick a high standing charge and a low unit price & your bills won't go down as much if you cut your usage.
But forget about getting it right in the first year.Which is simply a case of phoning up the existing supplier and telling them you have just moved in and give them the date you took over the house, and the meter readings from the same day. Once that's done, people can look at switching right away, can't they?
I'd setup a direct debit as well. Just don't agree to anything that ties you into a contract.0
