Painting Kitchen cupboards

I want to give our old kitchen a facelift.

The wooden cabinets are all in great working order, but a bit of paint and changing the door knobs will definitely help modernise it.

I plan to take the doors off etc, wash, sand down, wash and then paint.

What is the best paint to use? I saw Ronseal cupboard paint, not sure if this is the best stuff?

Any recommendations appreciated.

My friend has just had her pine kitchen cupboards painted with Little Greene oil based eggshell. The decorator used Zinsser primer and three top coats. I asked her to ask him as I'm thinking of doing mine one day.

Previously I used Neptune paints, you can paint their eggshell straight onto wood (no primer needed). I only opted for Neptune as have a few pieces of their painted furniture and wanted a good blend. The cupboards were painted about 8 years ago and still look like new. They wash/wipe down really easily.

I did mine last summer. I used Zinsser cover stain primer as the doors were shiny laminate and no sanding was needed, though it is very strong smelling. However you could use Zinsser BIN primer on wood after sanding which has a low VOC. For the top coat I used a dulux trade eggshell. They look great, well worth the effort.

The Homebase near me doesnt seem to have anything for cupboard but Ronseal, but I may go to a few specialist paint shops and see what they have.

We had ours painted 20 years ago. They have been redone once since. Dulux ordinary gloss paint.

I've heard good reports about Wilko cupboard and furniture paint. I haven't used it myself but I do use their other paints and find them good.

I tend to use their water based satin paint when I'm painting my furniture, as the cupboard paint is oil based and therefore needs chemicals to clean the brushes, which I don't want to out down my drain.

I have a Neptune kitchen and yes I find their paint is very scrubbable. However there is some fading to the colour on parts that have direct sunlight. It was installed in 2013 and had already faded by the time we bought the house in 2014 so from that aspect I'm really not impressed.

I have just done mine using the Wilko cupboard and furniture paint. For £13 I think it was, it really did the trick. I was willing to gamble as I hate my cupboards and wanted a temporary fix to brighten them up but after 2 coats and no primer they really do look great.

The paint shop has advised me to wash it down with meth spirits, primer coat and 2 coats of egg shell.

Id say thats about right. I'd use a good degreaser, like sugar soap, for the cleaning, rinse off with clean water and you're good to go :beer:
