Can I use the 1572 free service on Virgin calls to block unwanted spam/selling calls from abroad or this only available on BT lines.

Only on BT lines, and initial reports suggest it is ineffective.
A trueCall plug-in box or the BT 8500 or BT 8600 series Call Guardian handsets are very effective and work with any landline that also has Caller Display features.0 -
I am Virgin and just paid I think £1.75? A month for caller display, so it shows Out Of Area I know not to answer or a strange number again I don't answer. It cut down all the spam calls for me. Now I might get a weird one every few months and don't answer.0

Hopefully you won't be paying for caller display for much longer. Ofcom has proposals to ban charges for caller display.0
