Liquids on connecting flights

  • Does the technicality of having separate tickets make a difference in respect of the question? I'll have a boarding pass out of the airport so as far as the airports concerned it's no different.

They sell you goods for the flight that's departing from that airport to it's destination. If you ask for juice to be put in a steb they will want to see your boarding card. It will show a direct flight to another EU country so no steb required.

I've an upcoming flight which involves flying from the UK to an EU airport and then connecting (separate ticket) to a flight to outside the EU.

We'll have checked in online, only taking hand luggage and appear to be flying in/out of the same terminal so no neeed to go to the pre secure area if we don't have do. Can you connect flights inside the schengen area like a domestic flight where you just stay in the departure lounge or do you have to clear immigration?
I've had both scenarios within the last 12mths so it's difficult to give a definitive answer. My feeling is, by all means get the juice, but be prepared to hand it over if required.

Schengen area is not relevant. The details you give are complete except for which airport. With the boarding pass for the onward flight in your possession you can certainly stay airside in transit. Unless it's one of the few airports that still have individual security checks at each gate you are unlikely to have to pass through security.

When I connected (on one ticket) through Dublin a few months ago I had to go landside to change terminals and go back through security in the other terminal.
I understand that's not usually necessary but the area connecting the terminals airside was blocked off due to building works. Sometimes even the best laid plans can go awry...

  • Last year we flew from gatwick to dubai then Bangkok on to aus then new zealand every time we got off the plane we had to go through security! Our first ticket said dubai our second said new zealand, bangkok and aus were just fuel stops but because they wanted to clean the plane, we still had to get off, and come back through security, with all hand luggage! Gave up buying drinks to take back on, we instead drank from vending machines there and then or asked for water when we got back on the plane! Same coming home! Didn't mind too much getting off, stretched legs, had a walk so.....

Those airports have airside arrivals and departures separated, with security in between, which is less common in Europe where the OP will transit. But without knowing which airport that will be, there's no certainty.
