Am I running a business??

My electricity bill has been estimated at £900 (YES NINE HUNDRED POUNDS) per annum, I live in a 3 bed flat I am out all day at work and hardly stay there at weekends as i visit a lot of family. My flat is above shops is there some dodgy dealings going on here??? i recently changed to my new provider as British Gas wanted £85 per month Any ideas?

  • Hello there kazz3105,

I found myself in a similar situation, maybe a short read of my post might help. I was a single student, who according to the bill ran up 1320 quid in one year for electric (being on ecom. 7) with BG. I was hardly at home, did not use heating much and when my new meter was fitted i discovered my consumption was much less (according to the meter) than the previous one. I have written to BG to resolve the issue and am still awaiting a reply. Hope the experts read your post and are able to suggest something.

    what heating do you have?
  • I was on ecomomy 7 but in April had new central heating fitted i was told that the metre change didnt need to happen as they are aware of my heating change
  • Quick simple test to check if your electricity is going some where it shouldn't.

Switch off / unplug all electrical appliances check meter and record reading wait a couple of hours and recheck it should not have moved if it has then at least you know someone else is using your supply.

When you do this though, either do it through the day so you have some natural light or make sure you have a good torch so you can see the meter because you don't want to be turning on an electric light to read the meter.

Sorry if I am telling you to suck eggs.

Could it not simply be an estimated bill because they still think you have electrical storage heating?

I know you told them - but experience suggests they won't have taken a blind bit of notice of that.

Also you will probably still be on the Economy 7 tariff.

The first thing I would do is write to them stating that you now have Gas CH and ask what electric tariff you are on.
  • I'll give that a go maybe if i type it in Latin they might understand because they don't understand any other language.
    thanks again
  • How have you got on with this Kazz?

Have you found out where the money is going?
