Can you cover an exterior gas meter box?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.
I have seen threads about moving a gas meter, but not covering.
Can it be covered? Do i need permission from anyone to do so?
It is right next to the front door, and the white plastic has gone really grotty. I'm thinking about building something out of wood with a door on the front that will simply fit over the existing box, and it can still be accessed for meter readings.
Again... sorry if this is a stupid question, but if we could cover them why doesn't everyone do that? It is so ugly

Mine is outside in my garden, remote from my house and covered in a simple home made wooden box.
The meter was replaced a year ago and the workman put the old wooden box back over the new meter so I assume that there is no problem with it.0 -
Couldn’t you just put a tub of trailing plants on top? Seems a bit of an effort to construct a box to cover a box0

You could buy a new box - mine got damaged a couple of years ago and I bought a replacement from a local builders merchant for about £25, it would be exactly the right size rather than trying to build one to fit.I want my sun-drenched, wind-swept Ingrid Bergman kiss, Not in the next life, I want it in this, I want it in this
Use your imagination, or you can borrow mine!0 -
I cleaned mine and painted it the same colour as my front door because it was just inside the porch.0

Screwfix, B & Q, Toolstation all sell them. Easy to fit.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Mine has been painted for many years. Just ordinary gloss paint. The only reason for repainting it is because the colour has faded. Nothing at all wrong with the paint surface itself.0
