House with steel beam in cellar - subsidence?

Options
I'm househunting in Scotland. Seen one otherwise-nice house which has a steel beam in the cellar ceiling that looks to be structural (and to postdate the house by some time) so I was wondering about subsidence. The home report (which the seller has had done) mentioned mentioned internal and internal evidence of settlement, which the surveyor thought was consistent with property age and looked longstanding. The seller didn't know of any work done in the cellar barring repairs after a leak from above.

Should I be worried about subsidence here, or am I being over-cautious? Thanks!

Was the cellar opened up from 2 rooms into one at some point?

Have any internal walls above been moved?

To the best of my/the seller's knowledge, no - things have been left pretty much as they originally were. The cellar hasn't been converted or anything - and also still has quite rough-looking brick columns in place.

It is possible that they found that the floor of the room above the cellar needed some extra support for some reason.

Our cellar has a steel beam - it never crossed my mind that I should worry about it!! I think the area may have been two rooms at one point, and the space was opened up to make a garage.

Is there any suggestion that the steel beam isn't doing what it's meant to do? If it's performing its function of keeping the house up, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

It's hardly uncommon for buildings to have been strengthened at some point in the past. Logically you should be more concerned if it didn't have a steel beam... I wouldn't worry if surveyor wasn't.

Perhaps the old wooden beam was rotting, and it was replaced with a steel, rather than another wooden one - which is stronger and probably cheaper.

    I wouldn't worry about it!
