Visa Connect or Electron?

Today i went to Barclays to open a BarclayPlus account (http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?task=homefreegroup&value=12862&target=_self&site=pfs)
and was told i would get a Visa Electron.
But on there site it says Visa Connect, so what am i getting?! :o

  • Dont know how old you are but the link you gave is for a childs account (11 to 15) The little ** next to the visa connect statement says at the bottom you can get it with parental consent.

    Hope this makes sense? :)

Visa Electron is fine, can be used in most shops etc. Usually given to minors or those with poor credit.
  • Yeah i know, but i don't know if its called Electron or Connect?

    Hi,

I have a feeling that Visa Electron might be getting phased out in the UK. Lloyds TSB no longer issue them and even (my bank) Alliance & Leicester no longer issue them, instead they supply online Visa Debit cards to all debit card customers. A&L customers can tell if there card is an online type by the card number starting 4659.

They don't include a cheque guarantee facility but apart from that they look exactly the same as a standard Visa Debit card. However, as with Electron every transaction is authorised. So if an outlet cannot process online authorisations for any reason it will not work, an example is train ticket machines which just collect card data and send the details for authorisation later on the same day.

They don't always force authorisation (well, the Lloyds TSB ones don't) ;)

Depends how the retailer's system is set up.
  • Got it a couple of days ago - its a visa connect :D
On purchases its been identified as a "connect card" or "delta" :p

When our Electon cards were replaced, HBOS, we got new electron cards. Visa sign is different but still Electron.
  • It's got a "Visa Debit" logo on it.
