Exit Fees

Options
Hi All,
I'm going to be moving house in the next 6months, however my Gas+electricity deal is up for renewal. I'd like to switch to a new provider to save some money each month. If I do this, will I have to pay exit fees when I leave my property?

Have a look at your last bill.

It should give the Tariff detail, end date and exit penalty details.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Sorry if I wasn't clear, I don't have any exit fees on my current tariff. What I'm asking is if I sign up to a new deal today which has an exit fee and then sell my house in 2months will the exit fees apply?

I think the only supplier which charges exit fees if you move house is First Utility - most or none of the rest do this.

So choose your new supplier and, before you make the switch phone and ask if they apply an exit fee if you cancel before the end of contract because of a house move.

They should answer no except First Utility who will answer yes.

You really need to check them though, as last year many who didn't charge exit fees during fixed term, started charging, with some penalising for internal tariff changes.

This is why I said ring and ask.

I think most of them only charge exit fees only if you change to a different supplier before the contract ends or before you enter the 49 day period.

If you change property and inform the supplier you are no longer responsible for the supply to the old property then I don't think most of them apply exit fees when you move.

Who and which tariff are you hoping to switch to?

I would have thought you'd need to start a new contract with them to supply your new property for that to work. Otherwise everyone would avoid exit fees by telling their provider that they were moving out.

It would depend on the supplier & possibly the tariff the customer was on at the time of the house move, hence my question to the OP.

However, the OP made a sharp exit at post#3, despite only joining MSE that day, and has not so far returned.
