Sealing around shower tray

It can be, although in my experience it's more common for the tiles to go just short of the tray, and the silicon applied simply as you would with a bath.
That's how the shower in our new place is, too; we've not had any problems. I wouldn't have thought silicone to grout was a great idea, but I've never done it.0
