Is the RHT meter a 1 rate meter? Can you not have cheaper electric with a RHT?

Hello flowergirl1212121212121 and welcome to the Forums.

Helena isn't around at the moment so hope you don't mind me replying instead. RHT meters are multi-rate. The number of different rates will depend on the type of meter as RHT is a generic term used to describe various type of complex multi-rate metering set-ups.

Like most complex meters, there'll be periods of the day where electricity is provided at cheaper off-peak rates. Again, the actual off-peak times and whether they include all electricity or just that coming through dedicated heating and hot water circuits will depend on individual metering set-ups.

As Helena mentioned earlier in this thread, we're phasing out RHT meters and replacing them with either two rate Economy 10, two rate Economy 7 or conventional single rate meters.

Hope this explains flowergirl1212121212121. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

My Partner has electric throughout the house with storage heaters using cheaper electricity during the night. She has been notified by E.ON that they are stopping her tariff and switching her over to a more expensive one. They don't seem to be very helpful when she calls taking 45 minutes to get through to any one.She cant be the only one to have this done to them what can she do to get a more realistic service. Does anyone know what other companies run a RHT tariff. She currently gives them 3 readings so does she have 3 meters this is all new to me as I have the more normal Electric and gas meters. She really doesn't want to go down the replacement meter route if she can help it , thanks in anticipation

We had the same set up, 3 readings - these came off two meters. It's not just that Eon are phasing out these meters but that they are phasing out the tariffs that go with them. The replacement tariff for our economy 10 tariff worked out at a 40% rise in costs and economy 7 wasn't much better - no-one seems to be able to explain how such a big rise was justified - when I queried this I was told it was a business decision that had been passed by the regulator (so much for protecting customers!)

Keep ringing back the simpler meter team until you find someone who sounds as if they know what they are talking about - I had some very odd conversations with reps who didn't really have a clue about the set up we had.

At least once it's done you will be able to shop about, I think once you get a one meter set up you can get economy 7 (economy 10 is harder to find) from several suppliers but you need to tell Eon which meter you want installed (economy10 or economy 7 or single rate). We opted for the single rate as we've decided to take out the storage heaters and are now in the process of changing suppliers now the new meter is in.

It may be better to opt for an E7 meter rather than restrict yourself to single rate. Most suppliers can simply add the two readings together and bill you at single rate, and several suppliers such as Yorkshire Energy have E7 tariffs which are cheaper, even with a very low percentage used at night.

Hello awesomefire and welcome to the Forums.

Some excellent advice from captainkirk - thanks captainkirk.

I'm sorry your partner has had long waits on the phone. Please ask her to follow captainkirk's advice and speak to the Simpler Metering team. These advisors are looking after this project.

It sounds like there's some form of RHT/Economy 10 metering set up at the property. These set-ups were designed mainly for all electric properties with particular types of heating arrangements like the storage heaters you mention. They give a number of hours of cheaper off-peak electricity during every 24-hour period for heating and hot water. To do this, the meter will be wired directly into the heating/hot water circuits.

There've been various types of these set-ups over the years. It could be, like captainkirk, there are two meters - one recording electricity used for heating/hot water and the other for general usage like lights, TV etc. Alternatively, there could be one meter with three registers. Here, one of the registers will record electricity used for heating/hot water.

We no longer support these types of metering set-ups and are looking to replace them. Our specialist Simpler Metering team will go through the options and make all necessary arrangements. They'll also talk about the tariffs.

There's more information on another thread where I discussed this with captainkirk. It's at the link below.

Hope this helps point you and your partner in the right direction awesomefire. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.
