getting a default removed by virgin media......not as hard as you might expect

so long story short.....
was a virgin customer for 10 years on a loyalty package.
moved to non virgin area-asked for engineers to come out numerous times to clarify it was 100% non virgin area-weeks passed with no visit from them,i went with sky and totally forgot to pay my last 2 bills and the 1 i accrued whilst my account was on hold.
default registered against me-paid pretty much straight away.
fast forward 2 years 2 months to now and applying for mortgage, and pretty scared about the default holding us back.
i was with my mortgage adviser yesterday who spotted on my credit report that the default wasnt satisfied although it said £0, they had not updated it to satisfied/settled. i was told that this could cause an issue as if they put it as satisfied from this date (yesterday) it would look like i took over 2 years to pay which wasnt the case.
i emailed the credit reference team @ virgin explaining all the above and told them i was a loyal customer etc etc and would still be a customer should i not have moved.i asked them to rectify the default to say that it was settled from the date it was paid and i was a little cheeky in asking as a gesture of goodwill if they would remove the default as it may cause issues with my mortgage.
i wasnt expecting a reply for at least 72 hours saying no they wouldnt remove it and yes they can alter the default...................to my amazement i got an email back within less than 1 hour stating they were very sorry that it wasnt updated and as a gesture of good will they have asked experian/equifax to remove the default from my account altogether and alter it to say my account was paid in full from the date i moved out.
i would say that is a very very good result and it just goes to show that if you dont ask.....you dont get

Just goes to show; these companies (who actually shouldn't be allowed to report to CRAs) can do just about what they like with data on the CRAs' files. This notion of the file must reflect the "truth" - which often isn't the case anyway - is nonsense. Merchants have complete control over what's posted against you and there's very little control exercised over them.
Anyway, a good result.0 -
In fairness Bob what Virgin Media have done there is update the OP's credit file to reflect the exact truth.
The Default should not have been on the OP's file. They moved to a Non Virgin area and had the Engineer bothered to come out the Account would have been canceled from the move date instead of being put on hold. Granted the Op forgot to pay her last bills but these would have been written off anyway as you pay in advance and the op had already moved, as such would have paid up to date.
All Virgin media have done is rectify their mistake and well done on them for doing that.
So another credit file that now does indeed reflect the truth. The world is a better place ;-)0 -

If only mortgage lenders or anyone else could see the score.0 -
@kirstybum I agree with you there. Vodafone are awful they have defaulted my account for owing a measly £42.00. Safe to say I will never use them again. Also the worse thing is that the contract was only for 6 months and I stopped using the phone after 4 months but they kept on charging. Apparently cancellation had to be done in writing and not over the phone. It's a shame that a British company can act in such a disgusting manner knowing the repercussions this could cause i.e. a credit default on your file for six years.
I'm glad Virgin were more accommodating.0 -
