The self-employed don;t get holiday pay, etc. However, they also don;t have to bow down and serve an employer, which is a huge positive.
Unless they are in sham self-employment. Anything that is done to discourage employers from offering this, can only be a good thing.
NI has NOTHING to do with holiday pay!!!!!
SE should offer themselves paid holiday, paid from the profits they make int he other weeks they work, that is exactly how a company works, they get ZERO help from the government to cover it.0 -

The people on minimum wage are there because the job they do is only worth that amount of money...sorry but that is the truth.
Employers are there for Mabel who's job skills are only worth the minimum wage and when profits ...yes ugly word but true, have to be made .... employers , are not responsible for ensuring that Mabel has enough money coming in to get a Mortgage ..support her family in the way she thinks is comfortable and enjoy holidays abroad. Employers run a business based on PROFIT, an employee needs to be profitable or there is no need for that employee.
If Mabel wants the income to support a better lifestyle , then Mabel needs to aim higher , get training ..move up the employment ladder herself ..in fact....help herself to get a job that supports this aim in life
That is what the self employed do...0 -
It was reported as 60p a week yesterday but now that's been corrected to 60p a day, although I believe in the first year that is pretty much offset by abolition of Class 2 NICs.
Indeed Andrew Neil pointed out that it's in fact a net tax cut for most self-employed people.
Only those earning over £17.5k net pa will pay more in NICs and even that's only from 2019. Plus they gain in State pension rights.
It was amazing to find that both the Tory & Labour MP were unaware of these basic facts. Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.0 -

If you're earning less than the Class 2 limit, (£5,965 currently), then your NIC will actually be going up as you'll have to pay Class 3 instead. At 2016/17 rates that's an additional £588 per year.0 -

What has this got to do with the issue of whether the Tories were right to increase the level of contributions self-employed people should pay?!!
By the way, it is not just the low-paid that have to bow down to their all-powerful employer. Higher-paid employees do too. Additionally, higher-paid employees on average have more to lose than the low paid if they lose their jo, by rebelling against an employer.
Genuinely self-employed people do take on a relatively high level of risk, I don;t disagree with that. And they often have an entrepreneurial spirit.
However, that doesn;t take away from the fact they should pay their fair share in taxes.0 -

Not entirely sure I agree with this, I see these as separate points.
If you are an employee, generally speaking, you HAVE to do what your boss tells you to do.
If you're self employed, you DON'T HAVE to do what you're customer is wanting you to do... you CAN tell them to shove it! But that's a risk of course.... but then self-employment IS A RISK!0
