Blow Torch (for caramelising)

Options
Hi All

wonder if you can help at all?

My eldest daughter mentioned last night that she has never had a crème brulee, so it got me thinking and I realised that I do not have a blow torch (for caramelising items).

So am after recommendations (or makes to stay away from) on the above (and I presume that the re-fillable gas is easy to obtain as well, or is it a case of a universal one will refill most?).

I have had a quick look both online and on here (so can see that they are priced anywhere between £15 and £50), but not knowing what is good and what is bad (in relation to these items) thought I would turn to you to see what might be recommended?

TIA

I just bought a cheap blowtorch from a DIY store - about £15 I think. You can buy expensive catering-specific ones but if you're only going to use it occasionally, a standard DIY one will do the job.

I use the same blowtorch I use for plumbing, works fine.

A standard cheap DIY one will be fine, and the gas canisters are easily available at any DIY shed.

But if it's only going to be used occasionally, would sticking the item under a very hot grill for a couple of minutes not do the trick ?

It would, but not half as much fun!

When it comes to caramelising, the cheapest, small thing will do. Most people won't use them enough to ever need refilling. They get used once, the novelty wears off, and the die in a drawer.

Aldi is advertising a creme brulee kit, 4 ramekin dishes and a blow torch, for £14.99 available from tomorrow.

The Aldi torch will be fine. Refill with standard gas lighter gas.
