If it's in use then 4 hours is not unreasonable, IWoukd highly doubt any claim of 9 hours of HD video as that is one of the most power intensive and battery draining things to do on a computer. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro and I can pretty much go a full day of just basic browsing on it, not constant but using it a number if times throughout the day. My stepson has used it a few times to play minecraft and he has to plug it in after an hour at the most with the battery about to die.
I can play music through it to my sound bar and let the screen go to sleep and I get 2-3 hours from that.0 -
To confirm - you've had the laptop since new and for the last 3+ years it's never had a battery life in excess of 4 hours no matter what you're doing?
I have 2014 macbook air (13-inch, early 2014), which has "up to 12 hours wireless web".
It currently has 94% charge remaining, which it says gives me 3 1/2 hours of use.
My 2013 Macbook Pro (15-inch, early 2013), which has a nominal 7 hours of battery life, tells me it has 4 hours and 55 minutes left with 100% remaining charge.
You may find coconut-battery app helpful (http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/) which will give an indication of the state of your battery. On my mac pro it indicates that the design capacity of the battery is 8460mAh, but the current capacity is 7139mAh and it has had 275 discharge/charge cycles. The estimated life of a typical Lithium laptop battery is 300-500 cycles.
As others have noted, temperature affects the battery life.
You might also want to run the "activity monitor" (found in the Utilities sub-folder of your application folder) and clock on the energy tab to see what apps are hogging energy.
If you're often running on battery, ensure that the energy saver is set to defaults for on battery power. Also having a brightly lit display will suck battery much quicker than if the display is dimmer.
Finally, if you have a power adapter to hand, it's always best to keep the battery topped up given the finite number of cycles a battery will endure before failing.0 -
I am doing this on my Macbook pro, early 2015, and I usually get around 9 hours, often more.
I have Isat Pro installed on the Dashboard, that gives information on what is running and battery condition.

They are prepared to collect it test it and fix it, you have no complaint and certainly no legal right to a replacement.0
