Need Help, in a panic! (housing benefit calculation)

Hi,

I'm really panicked. I'm a disabled 25 year old with 1 child. I'm also a university student. My partner works in the science field and has just started his first paid job after graduating. He is 24. Our child is 1.

We live in London and because of medical reasons we cannot leave. I was told we would not be entitled to housing benefit any longer due to his working. I was hoping someone could help me calculate this to see if it is correct? I am really scared. His job is temporary.
  • Our "Applicable amount" is approximately 284 pounds.
  • Rent - 260 PW
  • My student loans income, including carers that is considered on my current application: 315PW.
  • Partners income before deductions: 400 PW.
  • Our current Housing benefit entitlement is £241 per week.

We currently are not claiming working tax credits. He did not work last year (due to helping take care of myself and our child) and my student loans are not taken into consideration for working tax.
Just to add, we don't actually receive that much money - I wish. We are looking to move into a council property to reduce the current rent, but it's difficult. For medical reasons this should be soon.

Any help I would greatly appreciate, I am very very scared. I don't want to get into even more debt.

Thank you!

With around £700 a week income it shouldn't be too difficult to pay £260 rent. That leaves £440 for your other weekly costs, which is a good amount of money.

What are your other weekly expenses?

What do you you mean by 'you don't actually receive that much money'?

I think the figures of income are gross which really does not help however if with tax and ni taken off there does seem to be still a lot.

Why don't you receive tax credits? Have you added your £20.70 per week in child benefit too?

Also, if you're disabled you should be getting PIP/DLA.

Also, if you're disabled you should be getting PIP/DLA.

not every disabled person receives DLA or PIP.

the criteria ( especially for PIP) is very restrictive and means quite a lot of severely disabled people do not qualify

Hello, how much have you actually got coming in if you dont receive that much ? it reads like you may lose £240 a week but gain £400 so be £160 better off unless ive missed something.

OK then they should at least make a claim if they haven't already.

£400 a week after tax and NI is about £335 from next month (new tax allowances come in).

Their applicable amount suggests they are in receipt of DLA or PIP.
