minor garage flood - sloping driveway

Hi,
we have a large driveway with a slight incline down towards the house and garage. There is a drainage strip up against the garage that drains into a pipe and presumably to a soakaway somewhere.
Last year, during an almighty torrent of rain, the water was simply not draining away quick enough and a minor flood ensued. Garage was prob under water to a depth of 5-5 inches for about 30min.
Its not happened before and this was an exceptional torrent of rain in a v short time.
Various things in the garage were water damaged by this. Have not bothered to go via insurance.
Just happen to be contemplating a new driveway and was wondering about drainage.
Any thoughts on this situation? Should I just accept that it was bad luck and no system would have coped with such a downpour. Or alternatively is this something that should be addressed and if so, how?

You've answered your own question.
Unless you can increase the area of the drainage grid and with it, the volume of the soak away.
Both of which could require considerable excavation.0 -
A friend has a very steep drive down to their garage which is integral to their house.
They had a similar problem but a more pressing one, they couldn't get the car in the garage as it 'bottomed out' at the base of the incline.
The result was a small speed bump type hump that he had added. (it wasn't a hump more a mound which allowed the car front tyres to lift before the base of the car struck the ground. It also stopped the flooding0 -
That was my thought, could you create a shallow "dam" behind the drainage grill that diverts excess water to the side somehow?0
