Would something like this at least fill the holes?

I don't mind having a go at skimming it, but I suspect it might not look too good :)

Don't think the Unibond stuff is what you need. A small pack of one coat plaster - B&Q code 5015892856197 should do (or seperate bonding plaster then skim (often only comes in big bags though )but will need to be built up in layers. I'm pretty !!!! at plastering but usually looks ok with a quick sand afterwards!

Wedge a small piece of plasterboard or similar into the holes just below the surface then use decorators filler over that then sand flat.
Decorators filler can be sanded flat and will be useful elsewhere.
Look in skips or ask a builder for plasterboard scraps.

For large holes, this stuff is very good:

It's pricey for what it is, but if you just want to fill a couple of deep holes, it saves having a bag of bonding going off in the garage.

Thank you all for the product recommendations - I will see what I can make of it at the weekend.

Hopefully once this is fixed, I will have no more excuses not to repaint the room!
  • Whatever you choose to fill the bulk of the hole with, be it plasterboard, bonding, drywall filler, that Ronseal stuff (which I have used, it is pretty good but its pretty difficult to sand), fill to just below wall level and then use a good, sandable filler (Easifill or Touprets) to skim over the top of the hole, just proud of the surface, then sand.
