Wall/ceiling stain - but no obvious cause, weird !

Last night I attached a paper towel to a long pole and pressed against the dark spot. No sign of dampness at all.
So I'm leaning towards the mention of tar in the chimney or something like that that melts a little during the day with heating on and hardens and isn't as apparent after the overnight cool down.
Buildings insurer aren't interested until I can establish a cause, and plumbers/roofers have said it isn't one they're area is causing. What do I do now - try a general builder or chimney sweep for an opinion perhaps ?

A chimney sweep will (should) be able to do a survey of your flue - This usually involves shoving a small camera up there to see if the lining is breaking down and what crap is deposited up there.
If the stain is indeed tar/soot leaching through, a sweep may be able to suggest a repair option.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Glad you're getting closer to identifying the cause. Good luck with it.0
