garden fence

Hi all,

when buying garden fence, how do you measure the between post distance?

my measurement was 186cm but most common ones I have seen are 183cm(6ft ) by 6ft or 7 ft which makes me think my measurement was out

height is 185 cm roughly so I get a 7ft ( higher than the existing concrete post) is that ok ?

what type will you buy and from where?
thanks

  • They are all standard sizes - traditionally sold in feet but now in their metric equivalent. A bit of a gap either side for expansion is normal. You want a 6ft wide panel. Panel height should be measured from the top of the gravel board - a six foot high fence will have either a 5ft high panel (150cm) with a 1ft gravel board or a 5 1/2 ft high panel (165cm) with a 6" gravel board.

Thanks what happens if i get a pannel that is higher than what I have ao 7 ft which will hang off at top?

    Will wind break it?

Also i have a middle post which is 40cm and not 6ft, do i get a 6ft and cut it to 40cm?

It might not look so good or be as stable if your panel is higher than the post. Also, if you have neighbours, there will be a maximum height you can go to - usually 6ft

My fence supplier cut the odd sized panels before delivery to my measurements for about £5 extra
  • Depending on the style of panel you can just get the closest to your size and cut it down to fit. A good close board panel with strong rails on the back should be easy enough to cut - a cheap wayney lap panel probably not without some reinforcement.
