Maybe someone could explain this quote from the article:
Doug Stewart, chief executive at Green Energy UK, said: "Around 15pc of households in the UK already have smart meters which could be affected by this issue. It is alarming, but it does not necessarily mean people have lost money. Smart meters are essentially a 'second check' as energy suppliers keep a record of energy consumption and if there is a discrepancy, they will know."

More lurid headlines where newpapers ( and the public ) keep getting mixed up calling the IHD monitors "smart meters ".. These are just a gimmicky add- on to placate the public with a little freebie toy .Not reliable and IMO after a few months when they have served their purpose in educating the public they should be either unplugged and stuffed away in a drawer or disposed of.
My very last call today was a inspection of a smart meter , the gentleman took me to the kitchen work surface to show me the monitor plugged in next to the kettle. The meters themselves do not process information about energy use or tariffs. They simply measure kwh .
I don t think articles(studys ) from the foreign press have any place on this forum0 -

I agree. The only decent thing about mine is that I can take my daily readings from it and enter it into my spreadsheet.0
