Looks like there might be a happy ending? We had a discussion with a Leak Team Manager this morning on the phone. Without going into too much detail and because of historic records, we expect to see a Leak Technician this Friday in order to locate the leak with a view to it being repaired as a goodwill gesture. After that inspection, I'll post here the outcome. Thank you all for your replies.

Just an update. The Inspector came and located the leak, out in the front garden. Black Alkathene probable culprit. After another visit by a small gang last week, another lot coming next Monday 27th, to replace as a goodwill gesture, the pipe from the meter to the house.
