Used Car Warranty Help

Hi All,

hoping for some advice on this....

I picked up a new (used) car last week, after driving it around I have noticed there is some resistance in the gear change and also a subtle but noticeable scratching noise from the gearbox, it doesn't sound great.

I bought the car from an independent dealer and they offer a 1 month / 1000 mile warranty however it also had the balance of the Skoda warranty (its a 15 plate, 17000 miles) I have contacted the independent and they have told me to take it to Skoda and claim under the manufacturer warranty however when I have called my local Skoda they cannot have it until 30th March which would take me outside the 1 month / 1000 mile window.

Just after some advice on how to proceed, the car does have a print out of its first service at 14000 however this is essentially just an oil and oil filter change, have never had any warranty work done before, will Skoda try and get out of or haggle over fixing and leave me high and dry or should I insist the independent either fix or take it back (I don't really want that and have to start the car search again)

any help much appreciated and cheers for reading

Liam

How long is the manufacturers warranty?

The sellers 1 month warranty wont matter if the car is still covered by the manufacturers warranty.

Although i do think its a mistake to buy a 2 year old car from someone that only offers a 30 day warranty. Double check its covered before handing it over.

    Try another garage.

I have checked and the Skoda Warranty is 2 years unlimited the upto 60000 miles in year 3 so even though the car is 2 on 25/03 its still well within the mileage for the 3rd year.

know what you mean about the 30 day warranty but didn't expect to get a fault within 7 days was just wondering what my best bet is with both warranty options "in play" as were.

As I read it from the Skoda website, they cover the car for two years with unlimited mileage. But if you're still under 60,000 miles, they will cover you for the third year too. What mileage is your car on?
  • its just gone over 17000 so well within the limit, my only concern having never had a repair under manufacturer warranty before is that the try to wriggle out and leave me with a big bill by which time the window of opportunity to go back to the selling garage will have passed

The point is, if the manufacturer's warranty (which is the only one worth having) doesn't pay out, why would you think Joe Backstreet Dealer will pay out? The answer is, he won't.

Stop procrastinating and just take the sodding thing to the dealer. if they refuse to pay out, take it up with the manufacturer - there will be no point running back to the seller; if they're the kind of outfit that thinks a one month warranty on a 2yo, <20K car is appropriate, you'll get nothing from them.

Don't forget the supplying dealers warranty is in addition to your statutory rights.

Was the service done within the correct interval. If Skoda say every 12 months and it was done after 13 months then Skoda may reject a warranty claim.

Personally I would chase the supplying dealer. You purchased the car from them. It's their responsibility. If you have a garage you regularly use I would get them to diagnose the isssue and then write to the supplying dealer asking for a resolution.
  • thanks all for taking the time to reply. Just to clarify part of the problem is that I am unable to get the car into a Skoda garage (due to their capacity) until 30th March

If that's the case, make sure you have written record of when the fault occurred, and that the delay is due to their capacity. It happened, and was reported, during the warranty period, so they are required to cover it IMO.

Can you not take it to the next closest Skoda dealer if it's not too far?
  • thanks all for your advice, managed to get it into a different Skoda garage on 20th, not a big problem as they offer a courtesy car. will see how it goes
