  • OP and GBob are rightly concerned about their passports being added to the growing CRA passport linking database. OP should ask the card issuer if they do that and post the response here.

And they'll say no because that doesn't exist.

  • Have you checked? It is permitted by under the DPA and If it doesn't exist, why is a CRA advertising it on their website?

A CRA is advertising this on their website are they? Well that explains why in years of working in retail banking I'd never heard of such a thing.

  • I would certainly be a happy patron of your bank. It is only in the last few years the CRAs have started capturing passports and drivers licenses, so not every bank uses those verification services yet. When you apply, the T&C say that your data may be shared with CRAs. That includes your passport, so it is quite legitimate to do this. The CRA is entitled to keep all data so that next time a person applies they can compare if it is the same passport. The verification software uses facial recognition on the biometric photo automatically and also checks the number and other details and visible security features.

    You're referring to Experian's AutoDoc-ID product (http://www.experian.co.uk/identity-and-fraud/identity-checking/photo-id-validation.html) right?

Do you actually know of any UK bank/building society/lender that is using it?

It's not even close to what sergeantsalt says it is, even. The way he phrased it, give any bank a copy of your passport and it immediately gets sent to Experian to be held forever until they do some unspecified evil with it. (The fact that my passport information is currently held by at least five governments anyway just by using it as a passport, and they are far more opaque about the things they'll use that information for, seems to have escaped him.)

    Utter nonsense.

  • Hello, I'm the OP.. Just an update...

I sent in the documents they asked for and they're approved my application for a card. Sometimes they just need more information from you before they can send out a card to confirm your identity etc

Happy to be an Amex cardholder! :)
