I've been using windows live mail for many many years, however it no longer will let me add/view my goggle calendar and sometimes wont connect to my hotmail account(s)

Ive since discovered that it has been replaced with Outlook 2016 which comes bundled as an annual subscription based service with other software such as word/powerpoint etc, however i have been a long term user of open office which does everything i need it to do so paid options such as word / powerpoint would be of little or no use.

I have seen outlook offered as a standalone bit of software for ( just below) £21 from here https://www.bonanzamarket.co.uk/listings/Microsoft-Outlook-2016-32-64-Bit-Download-With-Activation-Code/382318913?goog_pla=1&gpid=68416460221&keyword=&goog_pla=1&pos=1o1&ad_type=pla&gclid=CKWQ26i4v9ICFcuZGwod2_cIjA
would this be of any use? is it a one off payment and the software is yours to own for ever ( or as long as hotmail plays ball with it)

Have you considered Thunderbird (free) for your email client?
It has it's own calendar called Lightning, but Google calendar can be made to work with Thunderbird.

I can't comment on how well Google calendar works with Thunderbird as Lightning is good enough for me.
    Move along, nothing to see.

£21 for something which costs £110 from Microsoft itself sounds a bit too good to be true.

Outlook 2016 isn't a direct replacement for WLM as such - Outlook has a lot of features (mainly aimed at business users).

I'd be looking at free alternatives - as mentioned Thunderbird is one but there are some other options here:

If you have Windows 10 there's a basic Mail client built-in, but it has some way to go before it will have all the features of some other products. It will work with Hotmail (as you'd expect given they're both Microsoft) and does sync with Google Email/Calendar too.

At that price it's not genuine.

Don't get a dodgy Outlook copy. Use the free Thunderbird or EM Client or Mail if using Windows 10.

The built in Mail app on Windows 10 is very basic and has a major shortcoming with some (mainly company) IMAP accounts. There is no way of setting an IMAP Path Prefix which can mean that your sent items don't end up in the correct folder (or any folder at all)! It works fine with most of the popular email services such as gMail and iCloud.

Thunderbird is very comprehensive but does feel very dated. There are issues synchronising with Google contacts etc. In theory, with an extension, it will synchronise with other calendars but that is far from easy.
