Can I use surgical spirit as white spirit?

Options
Please dont shoot me down for this, need to dilute some Tung Oil to treat a squirrel feeder, dont have any white spirit to hand, and the Mrs is out in the car so can I use surgical spirit instead?

Crazy question, or do-able?

Why not just see if it works with a small sample first?

    Surgical spirit is denatured alcohol
White spirit is a petroleum distillate

Two very different products. I don't think you can substitute one for the other. Surgical spirit has a degreasing action so it is not going to go well with an oil as it will tend to break it down.

When my girls had their ears pierced, I went into Boots to get some surgical spirit to bathe their ears. Completely forgot the name of it and asked for white spirit instead! The look on the assistants face when she said, 'I think you mean surgical spirit?'. Fun times.

    OP probably is, if unknowingly.

So far today the bird feeder in the garden has attracted several birds, one squirrel, and one rather fat brown rat.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

Depends if you grow nuts or plant woodland. Most people do neither, so they're not a huge problem.

The grey squirrel carries a virus that kills our native red squirrel, so it's not loved for that reason either.

Probably the worst thing that a grey squirrel can do to a human is set up home in their loft. There, they'll wreak havoc among wires and plastic water pipes.
