Three contract ending.. silly questions

Hi all,

Silly question I know, normally when my phone contract ends, for the past 10 years I have just taken out a new contract with the same provider with a new phone, however I am a little bit tired of paying £60 a month now and I am happy with my two year old phone.

My three account is due to finish on 20/03/2017, normally I pay on the 5th of the month, and my contract has a 30 day cancellation period.

Can anyone explain to me, that if I phoned up to give my 30 days notice tomorrow, what is likely to happen? I.e final payment on 05/04/2017, and will my sim just revert to pay as you go? Will they just stop the direct debit automatically once the period finishes?

I am just being wary, as I know that if people get this wrong then it can haunt them with shredded credit histories for years to come.. just trying to get this right.

Thanks,

The service will be cancelled. It will not revert to PAYG, the number will be lost. Whilst they are supposed to stop the DD this doesn't always happen so cancel it yourself.

If you want to keep your number and change provider then ask for a PAC code. When you use that with the new provider Three will consider the service cancelled on that date. All Three phones sold after 2014 are provided unlocked to any network or if you're unlucky to get one locked to Three you can ask them for the unlock code for free.

The other thing to do is if you're happy with Three is to find a SIM only contract they have with the calls, text and data you want and tell them you want to go onto that. Your current phone/SIM will then change to that contract. It would be far lower than £60 because the cost of a new phone would not be included in the monthly fee.

I am afraid that telecom companies mess about quite often. There are no fast rules to avoid problems. You can ring to give your notice, and will be charged for the last 30 days. Depending on your bill date you might be charged for a full month but when the line stops working they will issue a final bill, and most probably there will be money to be refunded. I would keep the direct debit active just in case you still owe some money, to avoid getting a late payment marker.
The easiest way to make sure you leave Three with no problems is to take your number elsewhere by asking for your PAC code and use it within 30 days. But that is only if you want to keep the same number. And you would have to find a mobile tarriff that suits you.
Other option is contacting Three and saying you want to go Sim only. They normally do renewable 30 days and yearly contracts, and normally very good deals. Again it will depend on the sort of calls/texts/data package you need.

I would dispute this last bit.

If there is a remaining sum of money remaining to be paid, and if Three are unable to take it by DD then this may effect your credit history

When you phone to cancel you get given a PAC code to give to a new provider, if you dont use it after 30 days it will expire. If you dont leave Three omnce the contract ends it will carry on as normal until you move to a new provider but you must get a new PAC code to do so.

If your happy with the coverage from Three why not speak to them and see if you can get a reduction, depends how cheaper you want to go as you might have to lower some of your limits.

Do no under any circumstances cancel the DD. So many threads lately where the OP has cancelled the DD as they thought it would cancel the contract.

Phoned them up and explained I wanted to cancel, and ended up taking out a rolling monthly plan for £11 a month with no tie ins bar a further 30 day notice period, with the same set up as I have now (unlimited text, voice and internet). Straight forward enough !

Final payment of £60 on 08/03/2017 and then £11 from April on wards.

Am I reading that right, unlimited everything for just £11 a month. That is a serious bargain.
