Small recent default - help with my best course of action

Hi all, i'm newly joined but have been a regular visitor as have been trying to sort out my credit rating with the hopes of getting a mortgage early next year. I had 3 defaults when i was 18/19 and 2 have dissapeared having been 6 years, one will be gone in november. Other than those, i have small credit agreements for phone and car insurance which are all up to date and in perfect order, as i've been actively ensuring i dont get any negative marks.
So i went to check my rating today, and its plummeted! I look into why and find a new default for £96 from virgin media! Obviously i'm really worried about this now as would prevent my plan to buy a house next year, and it's only £96!
So why i didn't know about it: over the festive period for about a month i was staying with family away from home, then after i left i went straight up to a job in inverness (i'm a joiner and work all over the country depending on what jobs arise), and have been here since. I'll be heading home to perth middle of next week so will surely find a pile of letters from virgin media informing me of this default and the debt, however i did cancel my virgin media contract and was under the impression that the account was settled and nothing more was to be paid.
As for emails, i had an icould email acount which i no longer have access to until i go to the apple shop and sort it out, they blocked me from it for 'security purposes', so i now use gmail and haven't updated virgin becausebi no longer use them, so they could reach me by email. And as for phone signal, i'm out in the middle of nowhere (gorthleck) and have no phone signal. I did drive down to fort agustus and got 10 voicemails that i've yet to check, so theres probably something from them in there too.
So although the above sounds like a load of excuses, i genuinely didnt know i owed virgin any money, and i'm surprised they filed a default within 3 months, but i alway thought they were a decent company and i'm sure everything they have done is by the book anf they simply couldnt reach me.
With that knowledge, it's not their fault, it is clearly mine for being away from home so long, in a place with no signal for that matter! But regardless, i'd like to try my chances and see if i can get the default removed.
So i'm looking for some advice as to what should be my next course of action? I'm more than happy to pay the £96 plus any admin charge etc but havent yet phoned virgin to discuss this as i dont know of this is the roght thing to do or if i should be sending a letter or email to the correct credit department instead?
Any help would be most appreciated
Thanks, Robert

No harm in asking to get it removed, wont cost anything.
How did you cancel the contract as this might be important to what the next step is.0 -
Ring them and pay it, explain you have rang as soon as you became aware of the debt and it was a genuine oversight.....plead with and charm whoever it is into removing it, they CAN do so, at their discretion0

I'll take a drive to civilisation tomorrow morning and give them a call.
I moved house and moved in with a mate who already had virgin, so i told them this and they gave my new flatmate a better deal based on the discount i had (somehow i was paying less than him for the same package) and cancelled my contract. They told me thats it cancelled, everything sorted and i've had the tivo box long enough that i should be able to keep it without returning but if i did have to return it i'd be sent a prepaid box. I've not returned the tivo box, and obviously not aware of having received a prepaid mailing box to send it, could that account for the £96? Will find out tomorrow anyway.0
