Relocating to Manchester - location advice

I would say:
Bramhall,
Cheadle Hulme,
Poynton,
Wilmslow,
Alderley Edge.
All of them are nice areas.
I used to live in East Didsbury and while it is nice, it is surrounded by not so nice areas (I say that as someone who grew up in some of those areas im definitely not being snobby). I think the same can be said for Worsley although I am not 100% on that.
Such is the nature of cities, really. Worsley is bordered by Ellenbrook and Boothstown, which are perfectly nice villagey suburbs, by Monton which is becoming a bit of a trendy hipster enclave, and by Swinton and Walkden which are just standard working class suburban areas, but both have their nicer bits on the Worsley sides. The only thing to be aware of is that if you put Worsley into the Rightmove search box you get the whole of the M28 postcode, this includes Little Hulton, which is between Walkden and the Bolton border and although I've known some wonderful people from there, it has its fair share of issues with crime and anti-social behaviour. Always best to look at map view!
The areas you've mentioned are lovely places to live, but again, would be a fair distance to commute to Preston every day!0 -
What about Lymm? Village feel with restaurants etc, near to the M6 to get to Preston, can also travel into Manchester.Mortgage balance: £[STRIKE]79,061[/STRIKE], £72,400, £68,000 Feb 17
Current MF date: Jan 2039
Goal: MF by March 20200 -
While everyone seems to be naming suburbs of Manchester I'm going to go with Adlington, Chorley near the Reebok/Macron Stadium. Right on the M61 for commuting into Manc and Preston. And the really up and coming place is Buckshaw Village. Just to throw those in the pot!! (I don't live near either by the way!)
Enjoy visiting, enjoy exploring and I'm sure you'll realise it ain't all grim up North! You'll love how friendly it is, and how random people say hello and chat. There's gorgeous scenery and I'm guessing you'll notice your money will go further too!0 -
Or the Ribble Valley. Sixth best place to live apparently. Train to Manchester from Clitheroe and Whalley and a quick blast down the A59 to Preston.0

The top place now apparently.:D

Whatever location you choose, please note something a ranking police officer friend told me a few years ago. A cul-de-sac is the criminal's least favourite place to enter, especially after dark. Think about it: if a crim is trying to burgle one house, a neighbour might see him and phone the law. There is only one way in (and out) of a cul-de-sac....
Apparently this is reflected via Postcodes in Insurance databases.
I live in a cu-de-sac, have done for 14 years. Not one burglary attempt in our Close, but a few in the surrounding streets over that time, and we are one block and two garden rows from a main 'A' road to the coast.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

I would also suggest around Ramsbottom. Easy access to motorways without it impacting on your home. Unless work provides parking then the tram from Bury is good as parking in m/c is bad/expensive. Generally get more for your money than South Manchester. Plus the not to be forgotten Bury market. The disadvantage is that it is colder in N M/c than s M/c.0

Suggestions for Bury/Ramsbottom are good but just be aware that there is a campaign against building on greenbelt land as the council are proposing to do this in their housing plan. There is a facebook group 'Bury folk keep it green' for more info. We have some lovely green spaces which we don't want to lose and there are brownfield sites which could be built on.0

Another vote for Bury.
We live equidistance between Ramsbottom and Bury centre.
As a car owning retired person, I only use it now for longer trips.
How about this for transport links.
Bus from front door to centre bus station, every 12 minutes, (free)
Tram from bus station to Manchester Piccadilly rail station, every 10 minutes which takes 30 minutes, (free)
Train from Piccadilly to Manchester airport, usually 4 per hour, (free)
Travel the world,...(not free)!
And Bury market, where they bring coaches from as far as Birmingham
I believe, to sample life as it used to be!0
