Making a WILL

Options
I am making a WILL with a solicitors this month and would like my Assets list included in my WILL to make it easier for the Executer of the will but the solicitors have sent me a draft copy of the will and they have not included my assets, they say they will add something attached to the will showing my assets list but why not include the assets list in the will itself.

Because your assets may change before you die.

Are you going to have your will changed everytime you sell something or get something new?

Are you making specific bequests of particular assets?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Another reason for keeping this information separate is that a will becomes a public document after probate.

Do you want anyone who wants to buy a copy of your will know all the assets you held? It might not concern most people (after all, it doesn't happen until you're dead) but some beneficiaries won't like their exact inheritance being laid out in detail.

Thank you for the replys, all I want is for the Executer of the will to see for example the deceased had 2 pensions 1 with this bank and 1 with that company also 3 bank accounts with this bank and that bank and 1 property with mortgage outstanding with this bank and any outstanding loans. This is to make it easier for the Executer to know what is in the Estate. Thanks Mojisola maybe I will send my own list of assets to my Executer of Will instead of looking into the codicil document idea.

Keep that stuff as a separate set of documents that you can keep up to date yourself.

if you want to make the executors job easy have a trial run of form IHT400 so you know what they need.

I don't think the list of assets would be a legal codicil - that would be part of the will and would also become pubic.

I think the solicitor is suggesting just to keep a list with the will. My parents had a letter kept with their wills, explaining why they had split their money unevenly between their children. It wasn't part of the will.

If you do make a list to keep with the will or give to the executors, make sure you keep it up-to-date.

getmore4less' suggestion of doing a trial run will bring up any problems the executors may have if they don't have enough information.

We keep a regularly updated list with a copy of our will, which includes a list of account numbers, important contact numbers (solicitor, IFA etc) and the last 7 years gifts.

It would be pointless have any of this in a will, as it would need constantly updating.
