I want to find out about PPI but it's all so confusing!

I want to find out whether I can reclaim any mis-sold PPI but despite having read the guide on here I am rather confused. I have had a number of credit cards and loans over the years including:
Now the first issue is that I don't have the account numbers for any of the closed accounts, with the obvious exception of the NatWest card I still have. Do I need to contact the companies in question and ask for them? I need the account numbers for the template letters on the guide on this site.
Secondly, does the issue of reclaiming PPI apply to buying the car or TV on finance?
Thirdly, it says in the guide that if I paid PPI it will be listed on my credit report, but I cannot find any such thing in my Experian or Equifax credit reports. The reports have proved useful though in reminding me what products I have had over the years!
Does anyone have any pointers as to what I can and can't do in my case, or indeed what steps I need to take?
- Debenhams store card (opened in 2008, now closed)
- Virgin (MBNA) credit card (opened in 2004, now closed)
- 2 NatWest credit cards, (one opened in 2005, now closed, the other which I still have, which oddly does not appear on either of my credit reports)

Contact the companies concerned and if they still have any details of you, ask if there was any ppi attached to the accounts.
If there was, you would need to complain giving valid reasons, why you believe the policies were mis-sold.
Note that if you paid ppi on a credit card, it would be clearly itemised on a separate line, on the monthly bill.0 -
Thanks, so would buying a car and a TV on finance come under this?0

No one here can tell you what insurance you may have had, nor if it was mis-sold to you.
What you need to realise is that it's not somehow wrong simply to have insurance. If you want any policies to be refunded, you have to show they would have been unsuitable to your circumstance.
Finally, 2010-2011 is late in the day for PPI. By that time the mis-selling scandal was already well known and most providers had either ceased to offer it at all or tightened up their selling procedures to eliminate future complaints.
EDIT; Final sentence cross-posted with "Nearly Old"0
