Should I be getting rent receipts from my landlord?

I pay monthly by standing order but have never had a rent receipt from my landlord? Is she legally obliged to provide these to me? Or do I ask her for them? My deposit is held under the deposit scheme etc.

What do you want a receipt for. Your bank statement proves that you've paid. Well, that and the lack of a notice to quit. But, if you want one it shouldn't be a problem.

If you pay by standing order, you both have a paper trail of payments.
You only need a receipt if paying cash.0 -
If you were paying cash, yes you should get receipts. But if you're paying by standing order why would you need them? Just keep your bank statements.0

Thanks for the prompt replies. I need them because I am in the middle of a house move. I have just applied for a new mortgage on a house I like and the lender has asked for them. They said they wont accept the bank statements and need a reciept from the landlord. For some reason she's hesitant...so is she legally obliged to give me one?
Sorry should have been clear in my first post!0 -

She's probably hesitant because it is an unusual request for someone who pays their rent by Standoing Order and no she is not legally obliged to provide you one for the reasons the other posters have stated.
I have no idea why you have been asked for one...a copy of your current tenancy agreement annd bank statements iss proof of your payments.
If I was asked it would be hassle for no apparently no legitimate reason and I too would object (as a landlord)
I don't charge my tenants for anything unless I am charged, but I would charge out my time if I was asked to do this. The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself. (Oscar Wilde);)0 -
A long time ago and I do not know if it still stands but your landlord was obliged to give you a rent book, I know these days there is a paper trail in other ways but I wonder if you can insist on having oneLoretta0

If you attempted to charge me for a receipt, then that would be the shortest tenancy in the history of the world.0 -
lenders should accept bank statements alongside the tenancy agreement as long as the name on each is the same - they are simply looking for proof that you pay your way - show them 6 months worth - and argue your case with a manager in the lenders offices if necessary. no one issues receipts any more.0

Those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others.
I have writer's block - I can't begin to tell you about it.
You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.
