We certainly can! I found a tin and a packet in my cleaning. :)

I haven't done the larder recently... that's mostly dry goods whereas the cupboard was mostly jars and packets. Tins are in a cupboard which I cleaned fairly recently. I learned the hard way that the weight of tins can bring a cupboard off the wall, so they are in the lower cupboards.

I know for a fact there are lots of dried fruits and beans in the larder as well as flour, rice, oats and pasta. Not a job for a nice sunny morning.

We decided against the car boot this morning as DH wants some down time. I've given him a hair cut (MS) but then remembered we've lent the V@x to J and L (who sent a photo of themselves carpet cleaning as an example of Friday nights in your thirties) - so I will have to get the little hand held vacuum out. It's one I bought for the old house but never claimed on the expenses as I thought I might find it useful, which I have - once in a blue moon.

I think we will eat from stores for lunch rather than get fish and chips. Cheaper and clears space! Yesterday was sausage and bacon from stores, today will be fish and cous cous. Not thought about tomorrow yet.

Money-wise, I have two items to return for a refund (the charity shop without a fitting room). I'm keeping the £4 top. I've bought another Discworld book on Daily Deals (99p). I still haven't found a slot in the day for 'serious' reading which is a bit of a shame as I have so many books I'd love to read but which require thought rather than helping me unwind.

So far today I've put the washer on once: another discarded duvet of DS2's! This is a single so once it's freshened up I'll see if I can donate it, seems in reasonable condition.

Having avoided the morning car boot sale, we went to the afternoon one. It was lovely weather, hot and sunny, and there was a huge queue of cars waiting to go in so we parked at a distance and walked in (which gave me the chance to pat a travellers' pony on the way).

I've done really well out of it (the car boot sale not the pony). First I spotted some gorgeous things for DGD and got a couple of items of clothing for her at 50p each. One's a little dress that she will have to grow into but is very 'her' and the other is a little sunhat that I can keep in my bag for when I take her out. She has plenty of hats but I think she's getting a bit big for the baby ones (okay, and this one is Monsoon, and their stuff is so sweet).

For me, I found a pashmina, a cardigan, a jumper and a magazine file, then was looking through some biscuit cutters because there was one I liked, and got the whole box (19 items) for 50p. I have far too many biscuit cutters already so these have all been through the dishwasher and I've taken out the ones I don't really want, which can then be donated.

Total spend £4.50. DH spent £5 for an old paperweight which is fascinating him.

I had some of the cheese and chutney scones and the rhubarb and ginger cake for tea. This after reading about anti-inflammatory foods and deciding to Do Better. Ah well, perhaps I need to work on that.

Chicken chasseur again tomorrow: it's a current favourite though chicken is sooo expensive. I bought a discounted pack and the chicken breasts are still well over £1 each. There are enough to freeze most but I'm wondering if DH will notice if I dice one decent-sized one and share it between us. They are bigger than the recommended palm size for pieces of protein, so that might work okay.

Nothing much done in the garden today, though DH mowed the grass on the kitchen side of the house and I've finally planted my courgettes. I saved half the packet for next year because I don't need that many in one go.

    Spending:
    Housekeeping £13.31
    Clothes £2.50
    Gift £1
    Hobbies 50p
    Household 50p

I made it to church this morning which was nice - I was watching the person who signs in Makaton at the front and I know just enough to follow most of her translation which was beautiful. Also happened to pick up a new phrase: 'to die'!  :D Well, we live and learn.

We walked there and back so DH's steps are mounting up (as are mine) and we're both getting some sun.

There was enough chicken chasseur to feed us tomorrow as well as today: not bad for one chicken piece! I'll have to add another vegetable to make it go a little bit further tomorrow but that's okay. The rest of  the chicken, mushrooms and bacon are in the freezer now and I've gone through the ambivalent items from the cupboard clean-out and replaced a few but was brave and threw out those that are so old that's they aren't going to be eaten. I must have found about ten jars in this category.  :# All emptied and in the recycling now.

DH had a friend round so I spent an hour or so on the garden this afternoon. The longer garden (where the ground elder has a hold) was going a bit mad as I'd put recent efforts into the other side. It's mown now, and some more overgrowth has gone off the damson, but the borders are still untouched. I reckon on keeping the middle neat and conquering the borders by stealth and determination!

I think the gardening wore me out as I ending up reading in bed around tea time and nearly dozed off! I've pulled myself round a bit since.

DS2 sent a message to say the International Space Station was about to go over, then there was a YouTube live broadcast (whatever it's called!) of a manned rocket going to reconnoitre with it. We saw the ISS but DH was cold so he missed the rocket, but I saw it. So that was this evening's entertainment!

Elderflower sorbet or cordial was the first thought that came to mind when you mentioned an excess of lemons. Won’t be long until the elderflowers are out.

The job sounds interesting…haven’t you been doing some gardening at work when you have had time?

When I have an excess of lemons, limes or oranges, I zest them first then cut them into a mix of slices and wedges and freeze the lot. Always handy to have in.

Thanks - I've made elderflower sorbet in the past and it packed a huge punch of flavour! Good idea, I've seen a few early elderflowers already so I'll keep an eye out.

The gardening side of the job does really interest me, and yes, I did quite a lot in that garden during lockdown and at other times when I could get permission. It's the indoors part of the job I'm not so sure on, but it won't hurt to brush up my DIY skills and I don't see any problem part from tedium on doing H&S checks! I remain convinced there isn't enough work to justify a 20 hour post, but it did occur to me that I could offer to help with the morning changeover of rooms and still look fairly handy-person-ish! Staff are always rushed to clear and prepare rooms before the afternoon staff get in so a helping hand would be useful.

Thanks, I thought of drying lots of the zest, is that what you do? Unfortunately I already have lots of lemon wedges in the freezer, I keep losing the bag when we need them. I think I still have eleven left but we're down to the last of the lemon muffins so I may be baking again today.

I just freeze the zest as it is. Seems to work out well.

The bird food arrived this morning so I've refilled some feeders. Getting to a couple of them was a bit challenging and I realised how fast everything is growing! So this afternoon I probably ought to make some time for gardening.

Dh and I went for a short run before lunch and now he's gone to his volunteering, taking with him a bin bag half full of donations. Only three clothing items from me, so I need to do more sorting. There are two lots of laundry on the line: I have a backlog of laundry capsules (I order online and missed postponing a delivery), but I was reminded that I had some of those laundry egg products, so I've been trying those. To tell you the truth, I got mine years ago and just lapsed from using it, but there was also an unused one that I found at Mum's old house which is what I'm trialling now. It must be years old - they don't seem to make that shape any more - but it cleaned mud scuffs off my jeans so it must still be working.

I'm now hand washing some bright coloured items, then I must stop as I want to get it all dry.

The other things I should do this afternoon is look at that job application again. I'm putting it off! I mean, it's a sunny day in May... I've oscillated so much with how I feel about applying that I should be super-fit from all the exercise. :) However, I won't know how I feel about going on working at the same place till I get properly through the door.
