Soft stool problem-help?

My pup has loads of allergies. So she's now on wet Eukanuba FP dermatosis canned food. It's no issue with her like ability and she's doing well with it. But evidently expected her stools are softer than usual as it's just wet food... What can I give her to firm them up,.. It's making a bit of a mess on her bottom and she needs a bit more bulk.

The trouble is, if you add anything then you could well be introducing the ingredients that are causing allergies

My old boy was on a grain free fish kibble which kept his stools firm and his skin under control.

Have you discussed a kibble with the vet?

The only other suggestion is a raw diet which some vets aren't happy to go with
  • Ask your vet about a probiotic to add in with her food which will help.

I use animology digestion tablets (available at pets at home, amazon) which contain a probiotic on my dogs evening meal as he had very stinky farts and loose stools and they have improved, especially the farts! But the stools are much firmer now and hardly ever have tummy/bowel troubles. The animology tablets a small black plastic jar with a red label, about £12 in PAH for 60 tablets, cheaper on Amazon.

I'll ask my vet thank you. My dog hates dry food. And she's also allergic to storage mites. So wet food seems to work for her. They're not worryingly loose. But it's just obvious she's passing her wet foods consistency, so it wouldn't hurt to help it become firmer in that sense.

Can she eat veg and fruit?

If so I would be inclined to try some boiled potatoes ,maybe mashed up and raw grated carrot. (Some extra sensitive dried food use spuds as a base rather than grain.) My dogs love apples, carrots etc and one is wheat intolerant. He loves potatoes too!

With iffy stools I add a teasp or so of Slippery Elm food (H&B have it on-line, not in our small store) or even better Slippery Elm powder probably from a health food shop- only a tiny amount needed.

She can't eat rice. But can eat potatoe? Shall I use white potato or sweet potatoes? Someone recommended a bit of banana mashed up? I'm inclined to try either sweet potato or banana ? What would you recommend

Well, I would try ordinary plain old boiled white potatoes. they are very bland- skins and all. But only try a very small amount once. Then wait to see the result- if the poops are better you have any easy cheap answer.

Personally I wouldn't be trying banana as I don't think that is bland enough. My dogs are fine with it- but not a lot!

The Eukanuba food is fish and potato. However adding more potato could upset the balance of the food.

You should consult your vet before adding anything to it.
  • To firm up stools add bran flakes or pro-fibre if she's allowed. A lack of fibre in diet causes loose stools. I would also look into the food you are feeding her. Vets like to get you to feed the more expensive eukanuba or royal canine when there are cheaper better alternatives for allergies or raw feeding (pets at home do a pre-made raw food in the freezer section if you're not comfortable with homemade BARF diets). Obviously this does depend on what her allergies are.

Depending on her allergies, I would look in to feeding her raw.
  • Wet food doesn't automatically give wet or soft stools. It's the food doing it. You can try other foods, there are lots which are high quality and you can check the ingredients.
I find Nature Diet gives good consistency, much better than some other similar type of high meat foods, but you need to check ingredients to see what she's sensitive to.
