Is this in the ball-park for a quote?

I have been quoted approximately £195 for my Peugeot 207 (60 plate) to have its coil pack and 4 spark plugs replaced at my local Peugeot dealership after it began misfiring on I assume one spark plug and engine management light came on with reduced engine power.

I know nothing about cars and I know I will pay a little extra at a dealership but want a ball-park figure for this type of job.

The actual bill is going to be around £270 but £75 of that is diagnostics to diagnose original fault, my car is stuck there as I had to have it recovered to nearest garage.......

Is the reduced engine power just when you first start the engine? I had a similar issue with a 207 and it was a software update that was required. This had to been done by a main dealer.

No I was driving it down a road at 60mph when the engine light came on and dashboard said 'engine fault please pull over' so I pulled over. RAC said it was misfiring on spark plug and as I had a 300 mile journey back to London they said it was safer to recover so recovered it to my dealership which is a peugeot dealership who have diagnosed the above fault.

If you're at a dealer, and going nowhere, then you're really at their mercy.

Parts will be at full list. Labour will be at a premium.

TBH, £195 doesn't sound ridiculous for it at all.

Depending on what engine it is, a quick google shows it to be either a single rail pack or four pencil coils. CheapDiscountPartsForLessDotWhatever suggests £60-70. Set of four plugs varies by engine from a tenner to £60. So gawd knows what dealer price is...

It's a doddle of a job, but I doubt they'll invoice less than half an hour for it, at a hundred quid an hour or whatever. Then add VAT on to everything...

Hello everyone sorry again I am now a little concerned that they have taken advantage and ripped me off but need your opinion before I take it further as I don't mind if it is a fair price but concerned they knew I had nowhere else to go.

So for the job I have been charged a total of just over £295.00 with £82 of it being parts and the remainder £214 for labour?
Labour is broken down on invoice as £72 for diagnostic of initial fault and then £142 for 'Carried out replacement of coil pack for cylinder and all 4 spark plugs'.
Now looking on Youtube I have just washed a video of a coil pack on a peugeot 207 being replaced in 7 minutes....... add maybe another 10 minutes on for changing spark plugs and you have £142 for 17 minutes of work? Is this right? Am I missing something?

    You tube videos.
They don't always show the problems they had loosening the bolts and parts in the first place.
Makes it look so easy the second time, when everything has already been removed once and replaced ready to make the video.

Apart from that, your paying main dealer prices and overheads, buildings, car parking, receptionists, managers, heating, lighting, sometimes free coffee, and everything else that makes up a main dealership.
Not sure where you're hoping to go with 'taking it further'?
  • just for comparison, on my 15 year old focus bought the pack for £30 and spark plugs for £15 approx.

never done a coil pack before so took 15-20 mins and 15 ish for the plugs.

they should have it all out in less than 30 I would reckon.

Have they given you the time charged for the work? I would guess there's a minimum one hour labour. Remove the VAT, and that's £118ish/hour. No great surprise for a main dealer.
