My dog once ate a full box of thorntons continentals years ago one Christmas. She looked very pleased with herself, but no ill effects.

One of my cavaliers, always a gentleman and not greedy , once ate the most of the contents of a box of Celebrations (including wrappers) which I had left on the fireplace overnight. He had no effects , but was very very large for the breed and the sweets actually had very little chocolate.

I also had two springers, who could open doors and invaded the pantry to eat two wholesale boxes of Cadburys Dairy Milk and Crunchies, with no ill effect, but they did have very tolerant guts.

However, an internet friend, who was a vet, stayed up all night when worried by her friend's cavalier(who was a bit of a stunt artist, willing to walk over a narrow ledge to reach food) after he ate a full box of Thorntons. He was fine but again not a lot of chocolate was involved, though enough to worry a vet.

It does depend on how dark the chocolate is and the size of the dog. I once read that a 100g bar of dark chocolate could kill a Chihuahua.
  • We've always fed our dog human foods (within reason). As long as it's not too much and food that you know to be harmful to dogs, then all is fine.

Nobody knows your dog like you do.

My dog has a raw food diet so definitely no kibble/biscuit nor cooked foods, fruit or veg (they don't need it and can't digest it unless it's pulverised) on a regular basis. Dairy is limited to a spoonful of yoghurt, ice cream or a cube of cheese whenever we have some. We don't often have leftovers but he gets the rinds off steaks and chops, chicken scraps etc.

Our dog is 17 this year.

Been fed on dog food all her life with occasional snacks of carrot, broccoli and leftover meat.

She now also has yoghurt in her food to boost her immune system.
  • Mostly every breed of dogs can eat human foods which are safe for dogs. But you're not supposed to feed your dog chocolate, onions, grapes/raisins.
  • I feed mainly raw from a reputable supplier, but if I dont have any raw minces in she gets a mix of Forthglade meat, liver and chicken wings which doesnt give her a bad stomach. I no longer feed her any dry complete.
She has occasional veggie dinner leftovers, and some raw carrot. She will help herself to strawberries/peas/beans off the plant if I grow them.
I avoid giving fat and the obvious choc/grapes/onions etc.
I dont like to think of the dog as a dustbin where I can throw things instead of in the bin. Uneaten food from dinner goes in the compost or bin, not in the dog.
