Hi getting several quotes for cam belt and water pump. Car registered 2006 and done 71000 miles

Some say only cam belt needs doing but I asked for both to be quoted £224 plus vat is cheapest

others saying that auxilliary belt drive / alternator belt needs changing £302.81 inclusive is cheapest

These are local garages in Lincolnshire. Are the prices fair?

Thanks for looking

Water pumps are often replaced with cambelts when they're driven by the belt - if the pump fails later, the belt would need to be replaced again, so might as well do both in one go.

Looks like your engine has the water pump driven by the aux belt, not the cambelt, so a later failure would not be so major.

The aux belt has to come off to get to the cambelt, so there's no extra labour involved there - just the cost of the belt.

What are they quoting for parts, what for time? How many hours at what rate?

If you ignore the waterpump and it starts leaking they need to take the belt off to get to it.

A risk of the pump seizing and stripping the belt. I did a belt on an Escort. Guy drove it home with the temp soaring and the belt screeching due to the siezed pump. When i removed the cambelt cover there was a ton of cotton wool like material. Turned out to be the shredded belt. There was just 5mm of teeth left.

Don't think you need to have water pump done with timing belt on this engine as it is not timing belt driven and anyway pump should be fine with only 71K miles on it; (my Hyundai has 170K on original water pump).

Aux belt should only cost the price of the belt as it comes off anyway to do TB. Cost around £20 max.

Thank you for all you comments and advice. I have decided to have cam. water pump, auxilliary belt and tensioner as advised by Ford - they wanted £395. My regular garage wants £279 and I am getting a service also approx £100.
As I want to avoid any unecessary and unexpected problems I thought I wouuld cover all angles.

Yeah ok but bear in mind an aftermarket waterpump will be lower quality than the original Ford genuine one so changing it out might not buy you much in terms of reliability as the aftermarket one will likely fail in less miles than an original genuine pump. Still it's 10 years old so you can never be sure what's best.

When doing cambelts, always change the plastic pulleys.

I did one a few years back and luckily bought the complete kit. The pulleys appeared fine. But when inspecting after removal there were hairline cracks on the rear of them. They could have failed soon after.

Valeo or SKF will be OEM quality.
