I'd expect that you will receive a penalty fare for travelling without a valid ticket, and why not, you're bang to rights? Hopefully you have now renewed your season ticket, and I'd guess that taken as a percentage of the annual cost the penalty will be a fairly small amount that you can use as a lesson to remind yourself in future to renew on time.
GTR will not send the OP a Penalty Fare; the company may drop the matter without taking any action, or they may offer to reach an out of court settlement, or they may prosecute.

When/if you get your penalty fine you won't forget again I hope

A Penalty Fare is a charge that [GTR] is allowed to make under the Regulations and Rules. It is not a fine, and anyone who is charged one is not being accused of avoiding,or attempting to avoid, paying their fare...
A fine may, however, result from this but not before the matter has gone before a court, and the OP deemed guilty.

Can you explain why that is, is it because they don't do Penalty Fares, or that one can't be issued after the end of the journey, or some other reason?

In future OP make a note of when it needs renewing, you have a wealth of options available to do this.

So true I get the idea these people only want the way to get out of the problem they have caused themselves and when they are told the truth go into one. Yet if they followed the rules they would not be on here trying to get round the system :0)
